GPSR for Etsy sellers outside the EU

Etsy asks sellers who sell to buyers in the EU, the wider EEA and Northern Ireland for product safety details under the GPSR. If you make and sell your own products from outside the EU, this is what you need and how to turn EU sales back on.

General information, not legal advice. Etsy's settings and labels change from time to time; check the current wording in Shop Manager and Etsy's Help Center.

Who it applies to on Etsy

Etsy applies the GPSR to sellers who are traders and sell physical or digital items to buyers in the EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Northern Ireland, wherever the seller is based. It does not apply if you do not sell to buyers in those countries. Etsy cannot tell you whether you count as a trader; you set your trader status in your shop's seller details.

What Etsy asks for

Behind these fields are the GPSR rules: a covered product needs an economic operator established in the EU (Article 16(1)), and every online offer must show the manufacturer's details, the responsible person's details, product identification with a picture and any warnings (Article 19).

Handmade products: what that means for you

If you switched off EU sales

Etsy lets sellers stop selling to the GPSR countries in Shop Manager, under Settings and then Options, in the section about how you sell to GPSR states. Buyers in the EEA and Northern Ireland then cannot buy from your shop. Once your responsible person and listing details are in place, you can change that setting back.

Many makers paused because responsible person services were priced per product type. Ask for a price per product family or for your whole small catalogue, and restart with your best-selling lines. Our guide Paused EU sales because of the GPSR? How to restart has a five-step plan.
